'Armed' Suspect Flees Scene by Swimming Away, Police Pull Him to Shore

<br /> <p>A Gold Coast man has captured the moment Queensland Police used a tin dinghy in a Palm Beach canal to bring to shore an “armed” man that fled the scene of an incident on Sunday, August 28. David Rowe, of Palm Beach, said in a Facebook post that the man “jumped a bunch of our fences after disturbing one of our neighbours” and jumped into the canal in a bid to get away.</p><p>Rowe said Queensland Police “commandeered” the dinghy from three young teenagers and used a gaff hook to pull the man to shore. He told Storyful that the man was in the water for a long time, kicking the boat away when they came near, adding that the suspect threatened to drown police if they came in the water after him.</p><br /><p>Rowe said the incident took place on Mallawa Drive. Queensland Police confirmed to Storyful that an incident took place at the location.</p><br /><p>“I can confirm police attended an incident at Palm Beach around 10.30am on August 28, 2016 following reports from concerned members of the public of a man walking down Mallawa Drive allegedly armed with a knife,” said a police spokesperson.</p><br /><p>“With the use of a tinny police were able to successfully detain the offender without injury to any member of the public,” she added.</p><br /><p>A 38-year-old man from Maroochydore charged with possession of knife in a public place, trespass and assault or obstruct police officer.</p><br /><p>This video shows the man trying to swim away and two men on a small boat pulling him in.
