BERN, SWITZERLAND — Switzerland’s national postal service will soon test using robots to deliver food and medicine in three cities, including the capital Bern.

The self-driving robot is developed by Starship Technologies. It can deliver packages within a roughly 5km radius and is remotely monitor by humans to ensure safety.

It is equipped with camera and sensors that allow it to detect and avoid any obstacles.

To ensure security, receivers use a smartphone application to access to the package inside the robot.

“We will keep needing the postmen, it’s not a substitute, but it’s a complementary way of delivering things that today we do not have in our offering,” Claudia Pletscher, Head of Development and Innovation at Swiss Post told the Local.

According to CNN Money, the robots are already being tested in Britain and Germany, and are expected to be tested in Washington, D.C. soon.
