Denver police on Sunday (September 11) said that a female bus driver died and at least 17 teens and adults were taken to the hospital after a school bus crashed near the Denver International Airport.

"These are students that were returning to town and were heading back to home. The bus driver circled back around to this level. We don't know why. It is unexpected. She was one of three buses that were traveling outbound, and the preliminary information is from the other bus drivers that it was quite curious to them. They don't really know why, so it wasn't communicated to them from the other bus driver, so at this point, should not have been coming back up but did and then ran off the right side of the roadway, struck one of the upright pillars that holds the ramp that takes us up to Level 6," Denver Police Sergeant, Mike Farr said.

Local media reported that the bus was carrying high school football players and coaches from Broomfield Legacy High School, who were returning from a game in California.

The police say they are investigating the cause of the accident.
