"Belenggu" by Armjin Pane was first published in 1940. It is an Indonesian novel. It got translated into English as "Shackles." It happens to be the first Indonesian psychological novel. <br /> <br />The author has used the technique of stream of consciousness and ellipses and monologues to show internal struggle. The earlier Indonesian novels were not like that.
