Heartwarming footage has emerged from the US of a man rescuing a cat from a tree.

The video, captured in North Carolina, shows professional cat rescuer Patrick Brandt approaching the animal cautiously, as it looks ready to jump down.

Thankfully, the cat remains patient and Brandt is able to approach it and stow it in a bag, before making his descent.

"Casper was stuck in a majestic willow oak in Mebane, NC, for 8 days before I got the call to rescue him," Brandt wrote online.

"Thankfully I got him down before the 3.5 hours of intense thunderstorms that hit our area 10 minutes after I got out of the tree," he continued.

"The rescue required plenty of patience on my part since Casper was not interested in being friendly while in the tree."

Brandt runs rescuemycat.org, where he also receives call outs for "birds, and other pets, expensive toys such as model airplanes, drones, rockets, helicopters, etc."
