The latest seasonal storm to strike the Caribbean, Hurricane Nicole, has been battering Bermuda.<br /><br /> People did their best to secure their homes, while schools and businesses closed, as winds approaching 200 kilometres an hour lashed the island.<br /><br /> The eye of the Category 3 storm has since moved away from the British territory towards the northeast, while <br />continuing to bring storm surge flooding to the island, according to the National Hurricane Centre.<br /><br /> The authorities urged Bermuda’s 65,000 people to stay inside as the hurricane passed – a recommendation that was largely followed. <br /><br /> But trees were uprooted and roofs ripped off, homes were flooded, and thousands of households suffered power cuts. <br />High winds even destroyed the weather centre’s radar.<br /><br /> Forecasters say the storm is expected to weaken over the next couple of days.<br />
