Hillary Clinton has made her first public appearance since conceding defeat in the 2016 presidential race.

Looking strained, the professionally trained lawyer attended a gala on behalf of the Children’s Defense Fund, the organisation where she began her legal career.

“I will admit coming here tonight wasn’t the easiest thing for me. There have been a few times this past week when all I wanted to do is just to curl up with a good book or our dogs and never leave the house again.”

“I know that over the past week a lot of people have asked themselves whether America is the country we thought it was. The divisions laid bare by this election run deep, but please listen to me when I say this. America is worth it. Our children are worth it. Believe in our country, fight for our values and never, ever give up.”

Clinton’s appearance was scheduled before her presidential campaign ended. With her time in elected office likely over her speech was a signal that her focus might be on children and family issues.

Hillary Clinton, “The People's President”, speaks at the Children's Defense Fund — full speech https://t.co/t4umeiYa9D— Erin ♫ (@Nek0Noir) November 17, 2016
