Director’s Statement: <br />The previous working title for the film was “Anomie”, but we eventually went with the more ambiguous “XX” as we felt that the former was not relatable and would cause distracting confusion at the start of the film. It was also because we did not want to direct the viewer to any themes or meanings throughout the film since we wanted to provide an active and subjective viewer experience. With that said, the film is influenced by a sociological perspective - we have always recognised the vast power of media and the great opportunities (and responsibilities) filmmakers have in using their craft to address human concerns, or even to just make people think about them. XX is a film that aims to do that by connecting the viewer to the characters in the most human terms; by making them privy to their everyday actions, conversations, feelings and intimate moments. Even if the viewer does not take away any message or recognise any themes or motifs, we hope that ultimately, it made them feel in the most empathetic of ways.
