"Tamas" by Bhisham Sahani was first published in Hindi in 1974. The English title of the book is "Darkness." Govind Nihlani adapted the book into a movie of the same name and directed it in 1988. <br /> <br />The novel was the winner of the Sahitya Academy Award, the highest literary award in India, in 1975. The movie "Tamas" won three National Film Awards in India.
