Detroit cop dies of gunshot wound to the head

DETROIT — A Wayne State University police officer died in the hospital on Wednesday night after he was shot in the head while on patrol. <br /> <br />K-9 officer Collin Rose was shot on Tuesday evening a few blocks away from the university’s campus in Detroit, the Detroit Free Press reported. The 29-year-old is the first Wayne State officer to be killed in the line of duty. <br /> <br />The incident began on Tuesday when Rose was alone on patrol with his two dogs. The officer approached a man on a mountain bicycle, who residents had complained was causing trouble in the area. <br /> <br />When Rose tried to handcuff the suspect, a struggle ensued, and witnesses said at least three gunshots were fired. <br /> <br />Rose suffered at least one gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to the hospital. Despite undergoing surgery, the officer died of his injuries on Wednesday. <br /> <br />A suspect named in several reports as Deangelo Davis was arrested, and police were trying to establish a motive for the killing. <br /> <br />Residents said the suspect was homeless and had been living in a park nearby, according to the Detroit Free Press.
