Sweetwater “Flowing” 1980 Private Arkansas Folk Psych

Joe Turner, Terry Taylor and Harvey Jett (the latter formerly of Black Oak Arkansas) were all previously members of the Bono, Arkansas group New Life whose obscure albums Faith As A Grain Of Mustard Seed and Broken Heart are worth hunting down. Sweetwater has much more of a rock edge than the quiet country-folk style of New Life. It’s great to hear Jett finally getting a chance to rock out with his guitar, most notably on ‘Blues Breaker’ and ‘I’m So Happy’ (both rowdy blues/boogie numbers), as well as the summery ‘Used To Be’ and a dynamic version of ‘It Wouldn’t Be Enough’. Some fine acoustic tracks too, such as the beautiful dreamy synth-backed opener ‘The Gospel According To John’ and the closing ‘Broken Heart’. Also a cover of Country Faith’s ‘Come Quickly Jesus’.
