Canadian tourist among 10 dead in terrorist attack on Jordan castle

KARAK, JORDAN — At least 10 people, including a Canadian tourist, were killed and 29 others were injured when militants opened fire from a Crusader-era castle in Jordan on Sunday. <br /> <br />A series of attacks in the southern city of Karak began when a police patrol went to check on a house fire. One policeman was wounded when gunmen fired from inside the house before the attackers fled in a car, Al Jazeera reported. <br /> <br />Soon afterward, gunmen shot at another police patrol, while at the same time an unknown number of assailants opened fire on police and civilians from the city’s 874-year-old castle. <br /> <br />Police and security forces surrounded the castle and exchanged fire with the militants for several hours. <br /> <br />Four gunmen were killed at the castle, where police found large quantities of explosives, weapons and suicide belts. <br /> <br />The dead Canadian woman was named by CBC News as Linda Vatcher, 62, a retired teacher from Newfoundland who was visiting her son in the Middle East.
