John Joseph Montgomery made the first manned, controlled, heavier than air flight in a glider he built on March 17, 1884. Although not publicized at the time, this flight was first described by Montgomery as part of a lecture delivered at the Conference on Aerial Navigation at Chicago, 1893 and published by Octave Chanute in Progress in Flying Machines.
