<p>Tear gas was fired as anti-government protesters clashed with police in Caracas, Venezuela, on Wednesday, April 19.</p><p>At least two people, a teenager in Caracas and a woman in San Cristobal, were killed on Wednesday during nationwide protests against the government of President Nicolas Maduro, local media</a> reported. Tens of thousands of people joined the demonstrations, calling for new elections and the release of opposition politicians from prisons.</p><p>A counter-protest was also held in Caracas, the BBC</a> reported.</p><p>Anti-government protests resurged in Venezuela after the Supreme Court decided in March to strip power from the opposition-controlled National Assembly. That decision was reversed three days later. In a separate move, Venezuela’s comptroller banned opposition leader Henrique Capriles from holding political office for 15 years, fuelling additional outrage in the country.</p><br />
