BOSTON — Former NFL star Aaron Hernandez was found dead in his prison cell on Wednesday just four days after he was acquitted in a double murder case.

Hernandez’s body was found hanged by a bedsheet tied to his cell window, CNN reported. The Bible verse “John 3:16” was written across his forehead.

Hernandez was pronounced dead at 4:07am. Prison officials said the door had been jammed with various items from the inside. It does not appear that Hernandez left a suicide note. He was 27 years old.

Just five days earlier, Hernandez was acquitted of double murder charges stemming from a separate July 2012 drive-by shooting incident in Boston’s South End.

His lawyer called for a “transparent and thorough” investigation to be conducted. His former agent believes there was no chance Hernandez took his own life.

On June 14, 2013, Hernandez and semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd were seen arguing in a Boston nightclub.

Three days later, Hernandez and two other men picked up Lloyd from his Massachusetts home. That night, Hernandez is believed to have confronted Lloyd about the argument.

Hours later, a jogger found Lloyd’s body riddled with six bullets in an industrial park one mile from Hernandez’s home.

In 2015, Hernandez was convicted of murdering Lloyd and sentenced to life in prison.
