Early Wednesday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that solar roof tiles will be shipped to customers this year.<br />The company will work withPanasonic to manufacture the tiles, and production will start in Fremont, Californiain the second quarter.<br />Like solar paneling, thetiles will convert sunlight to electricity, giving customers durability and utility bill savings.<br />Back in November, Musk told investors"The base of the proposition would be, would you like a roof that looks better than the normal roof, lasts twice as long, costs less, and by the way, generateselectricity?"<br />Musk added that the product would also pair well with Tesla's home-energy storage battery pack, which provides backup power through solar energy.
