‘Talented’ Oxford student who stabbed boyfriend may remain free

OXFORD, ENGLAND — Lavinia Woodward may have assaulted her boyfriend while high on drugs, but she is apparently far too brainy to be subject to any proper punishment.

The Telegraph reports that the Oxford University medical student had a fight with her boyfriend last December 30 at Christ Church College. She punched him in the face and stabbed him in the leg with a bread knife while in a drink- and drug-fuelled rage, before then hurling a laptop, a glass, and a jam jar at him. He had to get stitched up, but ultimately survived.

The judge reviewing Woodward’s case acknowledged she was a bright aspiring heart surgeon, and claims punishment that would ruin her medical career prospects would be too severe.

The 24-year-old was told that if she stayed off drugs and didn’t reoffend, she could avoid prison when she faces sentencing in September.

People are outraged, of course, since it’s not like the same leniency would be extended to someone from a less privileged background.

Oxford is currently looking into her case, and say that even if she gets away with a lenient sentence, there is no guarantee that they will allow her back.
