In the first Asian nation to do so, A Tawain court ruled in favor of allowing same-sex marriage on Wednesday. Taipei’s top court found the country’s Civil Code, which states that marriage is only between a man and a woman, to be unconstitutional. Judges gave Taiwan’s parliament, Legislative Yuan, two years to amend or enact new laws. If passed, Taiwan can be the first country in Asia to allow same-sex marriage. It is also a milestone for the region, gay rights activists said. “Without a doubt, Taiwan is walking in front of other Asian countries on this,” said Ying Xin, executive director of Beijing LGBT Center. “This is significant for all of Asia.”
