Police shot and killed a gunman who held a woman hostage in a Melbourne apartment during what was declared to be a siege. Authorities arrived at the scene after an explosion was reported from within the building. Local media reported that they received a phone call from inside the apartment, where the man was heard saying, "This is for IS, this is for al-Qaeda." The relationship between the gunman and woman is unclear.
