Hong Kongers Gather for Tiananmen Square Vigil as Student Boycott Hits Numbers

<br /> <p>Tens of thousands of Hong Kongers gathered in the city’s Victoria Park on Sunday, June 4, to mark the 28th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.</p><p>Protesters lit candle, sang, and listen to speeches from survivors of the Chinese government crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in 1989.</p><p>The South China Morning Post said</a> that the turnout for the vigil had dipped to the lowest level in nearly a decade as local student union leaders asked members to stay away.</p><p>The Hong Kong vigil is the only large-scale commemoration officially sanctioned on Chinese soil.</p><br />
