The German parliament voted on June 30 to legalize gay marriage. Amid the largely joyous scenes, SPD politician Johannes Kahrs called out Chancellor Angela Merkel, who voted against, in strong terms.

Merkel, who voted against the bill, supported its introduction before the Bundestag, and freed her party’s deputies from the whip for the vote. For Kahrs this was not yet another example of Merkel’s canny strategic skill, but, he railed, “pathetic and embarrassing.”

Kahrs, who is gay, directly addressed Merkel during his speech, concluding: “Thanks for nothing!” Credit: Bundestag via Storyful
