WASHINGTON — An autonomous robot given the task of guarding a mall and office complex apparently chose to end it all by drowning itself in a water fountain.

The Knightscope K5 robot drove into a water fountain at the Georgetown Waterfront in Washington on Tuesday, the Washington Post reported.

The K5 costs about $7 an hour to rent out, which is a big saving on the average $11 an hour cost of a human security guard.

The K5 is equipped with microphones, cameras and other sensors, and makes a whistling noise when it catches wrongdoers up to no good.

Last summer, a K5 knocked over a toddler, injuring the child’s leg, according to the Verge. In April this year, a man was arrested in Mountain View, California for knocking over a K5 while drunk.
