<p><b> by Jeff Donlan</b></p>A Turkish animal rights group and an international animal charity have teamed up to rescue imperiled animals from an abandoned zoo in the war-torn Syrian city of Aleppo.<p>The Syrian civil war is at the heart of a global crisis of displacement and refugee movement. After some of the most intense fighting in Syria’s second-largest city, the war has reached the walls and fences of a local zoo.</p><p>Three lions, two tigers, two bears, and two hyenas from the Aleppo zoo are now being treated at a wildlife shelter in Turkey.</p><p>After workers fled the city, the emaciated critters had been left to fend for themselves at the Magic World Zoo. Some animals did not survive the relentless bombing.</p><p>A second rescue is planned to save the zoo’s remaining inhabitants.
