by Andrew Caringi

Can you really turn bottles into boats? For one student in Cameroon, the answer is obviously yes.
A fishing boat recently made by the student, Ismael Essome Ebode, was made out of used plastic bottles. Ebode said he created it to help fight pollution.

“We are fighting,” he said. “We are trying to find innovative solutions that are new and can be useful in order to add value to these bottles.”

He’s been testing the boat and trying to convince local fishermen to use it as a cheaper, environmentally-friendly option to wooden boats.

In 2014, Cameroon banned disposable plastic bags. But the law is rarely enforced in rural areas, where many merchants believe the alternatives are more expensive.

Ebode has now made five boats, showing that hope does indeed float.

The post Cameroon Student Turns Used Plastic Bottles Into Fishing Boats appeared first on Vocativ.
