Boat carrying migrants lands on popular tourist beach in Spain

Footage on social media shows a dinghy carrying dozens of migrants landing in the middle of a popular tourist beach in southern Spain on Wednesday (August 9.)<br /><br />Holiday makers watch as the migrants scramble to reach the shore, jump out and run across the beach.<br /><br />The boat landed at Playa de los Alemanes in Zahara de los Atunes on the coast of Andalusia at around 2 p.m local time after crossing the Strait of Gibraltar.<br /><br />According to a report from El Confidencial, they ran towards a series of pine trees near the Faro de Camarinal lighthouse.<br /><br />The dinghy’s point of departure was not known and there was no immediate comment from police.<br /><br />Due to good weather conditions, Spain has seen an increase in attempts by migrants to reach its shores over the past few weeks. <br /><br />On August 1 nearly 70 sub-Saharan African migrants were injured when about 200 tried to jump the razor-wire-topped fence separating northern Morocco from the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.<br /><br />Police said around 60 managed to enter Spanish territory whilst the Red Cross said 14 people had to be hospitalised. <br /><br />The migrants used wire cutters to breach a gate, according to a spokesman from the Ceuta government. <br /><br />Between 1,000 and 1,500 people are camping out in the scrub and woods around the enclave waiting for the opportunity to rush the border.<br /><br />Migrants frequently jump or cut through the fences of Spain’s two enclaves in northern Africa, Ceuta and Melilla, or attempt to reach them by swimming along the Moroccan coastlines.<br /><br />Over 100,000 migrants reached Europe from North Africa and the Middle East from January to June, the overwhelming majority coming by sea, according to the International Organization of Migration. <br /><br />Overall numbers have fallen by almost 60 percent from the same period the previous year.<br />
