The family tree starts from Bhramha to Janamejaya... <br /> <br />Chandra has an affair with Brihaspathi's wife - Tara and begets Budha (Mercury) who marries Ila (The son-later-turned-daughter of Vaivasvata Manu). <br /> <br />Ila and Budha give birth to Pururavas who marries (? or is in a relationship with Urvasi) and gives birth to Yayati. <br /> <br />We are aware of Yayati, Sarmishta and Devayani's story and their sons. So the sons born of Yayati and Sarmishta are the Purus and those born to Yayati and Devayani are the Yadu's. It was in the Puru line that many generations later that Shantanu is born. <br /> <br />The Purus were a clan, or a confederation of clans, mentioned many times in the Rigveda. RV 7.96.2 locates them at the banks of the Sarasvati River. There were several factions of Purus, one being the Bharatas. Purus rallied many other groups against King Sudas of the Bharata, but were defeated in the Battle of the Ten Kings (RV 7.18, etc.,).
