Donald Trump unveiled sweeping new US sanctions against North Korea on Thursday as part of the latest effort to halt the country’s new clear weapons programme. <br /><br />The president hailed an order which will boost the US Treasury’s powers to clamp down on firms and entities that trade with Pyongyang. <br /><br />“Our new executive order will cut off sources of revenue that fund North Korea’s efforts to develop the deadliest weapons known to humankind,” Trump said.<br /><br />Trump also praised a move by China’s central bank which ordered Chinese lenders to stop doing business with North Korea.<br /><br />On Tuesday Trump vowed to “totally destroy” the North if it posed a threat to the US and its allies in the region. <br /><br />The order comes less than two weeks after the United Nations approved tough new sanctions against Kim Jong-un’s regime following Pyongyang’s sixth and most powerful nuclear test.<br />
