Scientists discover octopus town near Australian coast

JERVIS BAY, AUSTRALIA — The "gloomy" octopus is widely thought to be an antisocial creature, but new research may change this thinking.<br /><br />A study published in the journal Marine and Freshwater Behaviour and Physiology details the discovery of a site in close to Jervis Bay, Australia's occupied by 15 of the creatures.<br /><br />Scientists observed complex social behavior in the creatures, including, mating, mate defense, as well as eviction from the site and exclusion of octopuses from the group.<br /><br />The study provides scientists with a deeper understanding of one of nature's most difficult to study creatures.
