Britain and Ireland hold Brexit and NI assembly talks

The British Prime Minister Theresa May has held talks at Downing Street with the Irish premier Leo Varadkar.<br /><br />It is May’s first meeting with a European Union leader since her keynote Florence speech on Friday in which she set out her plans for Brexit.<br /><br />Varadkar said he wanted to ensure a close relationship between Ireland and the UK is maintained post-Brexit, and that the common travel area remained in place.<br /><br />He described her proposal for a post-Brexit transitional period as a “step in the right direction.”<br /><br />The pair also discussed kickstarting Northern Ireland’s stalled executive assembly; with Varadkar adding that it was important the UK didn’t want any physical border.<br />
