Texas student in custody after campus police officer shot dead

A university in Texas was locked down on Monday evening after a campus police officer was shot dead.<br /><br />The suspect, a 19-year-old student, was taken into custody.<br /><br />Police at Texas Tech University in Lubbock made a student check on Monday night and are said to have found evidence of drugs and drugs paraphernalia in the suspect’s room<br /><br />He was then taken to the campus police station where he’s said to have pulled out a gun and shot the officer dead before escaping on foot.<br /><br />The university some 600 kilometres northwest of Austin was put on lockdown while the suspect was at large.<br /><br />He was later apprehended and the alert was lifted.<br /><br />Declaring an emergency, the university said counselling was available for staff or students who needed it.<br /><br />According to one monitoring group, nearly 12,000 people including over 200 police officers have been killed by gun violence in the US so far this year (October 10). <br /><br />Support services are available for employees and students following the events of this evening.
