Former footballer Weah and VP set to contest Liberia's presidential run-off

Former footballer George Weah and Vice President Joseph Boakai are well ahead in Liberia’s presidential poll, according to partial results. <br /><br />It means the two candidates look set to contest November’s run-off in what would be the west African nation’s first democratic transfer of power in more than 70 years. <br /><br />The Liberian electoral commission gave Weah 39.2 percent of the vote, compared to Boakai’s 29.6 percent. Charles Brumskine, a lawyer, was a distant third with 9.7 percent.<br /><br />The election is seeking to choose the successor to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf – Africa’s first elected female president and a Nobel Peace laureate.<br />
