Giant clouds of grey smoke cloaked the horizon in parts of central Portugal as fast-moving wildfires continue to strain emergency responders. In the village of Chao de Codes in Macao locals and firefighters battled a giant blaze that led to a call for evacuation, but many locals refused to leave their homes. About 80 percent of Portugal is enduring severe drought.
