An iPhone Ultrasound Helped This Doctor Detect His Own Cancer

2017-11-03 19 Dailymotion

This doctor detected a cancerous tumor in his neck using a pocket-sized ultrasound device connected to his iPhone.

Dr. John Martin was testing the "Butterfly IQ" device after joining its creators' company as chief medical officer. After he had felt a thickness in his throat, he scanned the area with the device. He detected a three-inch mass, and a biopsy later confirmed it was cancerous.

The device, developed by Connecticut-based start-up Butterfly Network, pairs with the user’s iPhone and is significantly cheaper than regular ultrasound machines, costing about 10 times less than the lowest-end system. That means easier access for users, and quicker diagnoses, which could save lives.
