Natives of Ithaca NY, twelve-man Afrobeat band BMSM channel a global sense of musicality in their creations – stretching deep into the innards of West African, Caribbean, Western, jazz and funk traditions.<br /><br />Their latest 12", out later this month via Blank Slate, is an embodiment of all the band's disciplines – with "Sharks" taking the top spot in our rankings. Showcasing a musical knowledge that is as extensive as it is intricate, BMSM aren't afraid to yo-yo between different musical temperaments during its 6.5-minute length. "Sharks" sets off straightaway with a hastened tango-style pace to quicken the heartbeat, slipping fluently in and out of a major-minor multiple personally disorder throughout. The final two minutes are set aside for a complete upheaval of musical mood – where an arpeggiac synth and screaming alto-sax bring a kaleidoscopic, almost Terry Rileyian quality into the mix.
