You know how Leonardo DiCaprio dies in Titanic, but many believe that he didn’t necessarily have to? Well Director James Cameron wants to clear that all up.
Cameron tells Vanity Fair all about it. He’s aware that many fans of the movie believe that Kate Winslet’s character, Rose, could have made room for DiCaprio’s character, Jack, on a floating door.
Cameron breaks it down. He tells the magazine, “The answer is very simple because it says on page 147 of the script that Jack dies…”
20 years later, that reasoning doesn’t cut it. But Cameron elaborates, saying, “Had he lived, the ending of the film would have been meaningless… The film is about death and separation; he had to die. So whether it was that, or whether a smoke stack fell on him, he was going down. It’s called art, things happen for artistic reasons, not for physics reasons.”
Two decades later, fan’s hearts still go on for poor old fictional Jack.
