The manga, released in 1990, is set in a cyberpunk future where Alita, a discarded cyborg, is discovered by a cybernetic doctor who restores her. Left with only a few discarded memories of who she was, Alita becomes a bounty hunter as she tries to remember everything that happened to her in a past life. <br /> <br />The manga led to a couple of spinoffs: Battle Angel Alita: Last Order and Gunnm: Mars Chronicle. Cameron, who is set to produce the film, has said in the past he plans to focus on the core of the story, and include aspects of a fictional sport known as Motorball, which was seen in the third and fourth volumes of the manga. <br /> <br />Rodriguez, best known for Sin City, Desperado, From Dusk till Dawn and Machete, is set to direct.
