<br /> <p>Protests erupted in Lima, Peru, on December 25, following President Pedro Pablo Kuczynsk’s decision to pardon former leader Alberto Fujimori on health grounds the previous day.</p><p>The president had promised during his election campaign not to pardon the former strongman leader, who remains a deeply divisive figure within Peru for his handling of the country’s economic crisis in the 1990s and conflict with left-wing insurgents.</p><p>Fujimori was imprisoned for human rights and graft crimes that occurred under his rule from 1990 to 2000.
