Several Arrested in New York During Protest Against Detention of Immigrant Rights Activist

<p>Several arrests were made as demonstrators rallied outside a federal building in New York City on Thursday, January 11, in support of Ravi Ragbir, an immigrant rights activist who was reportedly detained by immigration officials that morning.</p><p>According to Buzzfeed</a>, who reported from the scene of the protest, Ragbir was detained during a routine check-in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and told he would be deported.</p><p>Eighteen people were arrested during the protest, Buzzfeed reported.</p><p>Among those arrested during the protest outside the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building were city councilmen Ydanis Rodriguez</a> and Jumaane Williams. New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson was also among the protesters.</p><p>Both Rodriguez and Williams had been long-time supporters of Ragbir and joined him during an ICE check-in at the same building in May 2017, as reported by Gothamist</a>.
