VTR: Why does every chapter in the Qur'an begin with Basmala?<br /><br />ADNAN OKTAR: In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful; this phrase brings relief and contentment to believers’ hearts. Being aware of how God is merciful, almighty and watches over His subjects helps lift believers' spirits before starting to read the verses. Because the verses of the Qur'an mostly have a strictly cautionary tone and many of them speaks of hell. God tells about the punishment that disbelievers will suffer. This is why God starts every surah with His names, the Most Gracious and the Most Merciful; so that believers are not overcome with a sense of dread. By doing so, God reminds believers that "I am the Most Gracious and Merciful. I watch over you, love you, and want what is best for you.
