Islamic State militants attacked a Save the Children's office in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday,... killing at last five people and injuring dozens.<br />The NGO has condemned the attack,... with the United Nations stressing that aid workers should never be a target.<br />Park Se-young has more.<br /> <br /> Gunmen stormed an office of Save the Children in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, killing at least five people and injuring 26.<br />Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, which began with a suicide car bomb outside the Jalalabad office and set off a shootout with police that lasted almost ten hours.<br />Up to 46 people took refuge in a fortified "safe room" in the compound and were rescued by late afternoon.<br />Save the Children denounced the attack, which killed three of their staff members.<br /><br /> "Save the Children condemns this attack. Aid workers should never, never be a target."<br /><br /> The NGO, which has operated in Afghanistan since 1976, said it has closed its offices and suspended its operations temporarily, but remains committed to helping the children there.<br /><br /> "We have suspended for a while our operations in Afghanistan, but we rest deeply committed to helping the children in Afghanistan. … Save the Children has been there for more than 40 years and we will stay in Afghanistan to help all these children."<br /><br /> UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he was "appalled and deeply saddened" by the casualties and reiterated that aid workers should never be targeted.<br />Park Se-young, Arirang News. <br />
