The Korean government has designated February 28th as a national memorial day,... to commemorate the Daegu democracy movement of 1960.<br /> It passed the decision during Tuesday morning's cabinet meeting,... making the day the 48th national memorial day. <br />On February 28th 1960,... students from eight high schools in the southeastern city of Daegu took to the streets, protesting against then-President Rhee Syngman , and his attempt to use election fraud to secure a fourth term in office<br />Those protests led to the April 19th Movement in the same year,... which ended the authoritarian rule of the Rhee administration. <br />The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs will now take charge of the day's ceremonies and events,... which had previously been organized by the city of Daegu. <br />
