Changes in advertising spending over the years.<br /><br />In 1980, newspapers accounted for nearly half of all media advertising -- 40 billion dollars a year. <br /><br />Magazines held about a tenth, as did radio. <br /><br />TV and film garnered 30 billion. <br /><br />And outdoor adverts the rest. <br /><br />Over the decade, newspaper ads grew. <br /><br />As did others -- notably a 40 percent increase in TV and film. <br /><br />And despite dips, for the next 15 years media advertising grew until the financial crisis. <br /><br />Then it fell off a cliff. <br /><br />Since then, it’s grown mostly due to internet ads. <br /><br />Most other media stayed steady. <br /><br />But newspapers ads continued to drop. <br /><br />Today, newspapers ad income is half what it was in 1980 -- and half of internet ad spending too.<br /><br />And these trends are expected to continue. <br /><br />All traditional media has suffered.
