Turkish-backed forces have taken over the Syrian city of Afrin after Kurdish forces were forced to leave the area. <br /> Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his Special Forces and the Free Syrian Army seized control of the city center on Sunday morning, local time.<br />Turkish fighters could be seen waving flags and taking down a statue of a legendary Kurdish figure. <br />It is the result of a two-month operation to clear the border region of the Kurdish YPG militia, despite calls from Europe and the U.S. urging Ankara to stop the offensive.<br />Turkey sees the YPG as terrorists, but the U.S. has trained and even armed some Kurdish troops to fight against the Islamic State group. <br />
