Henderson Constable Earl Mitchell dropped his bid for a seventh term in office after the Review-Journal raised questions about his spending of public funds. Despite being paid more than $180,000 a year in salary and pension benefits, Mitchell wrote himself $70,000 in checks from a public account. Mitchell also withdrew about $9,000 in cash from public accounts. In 2016, Mitchell withdrew $500 at an ATM at Timbers. Less than 20 minutes later he took out another $500.
In November he withdrew $100 at a Sunset Station ATM. There was also a $518 tab at this pub on the Strip.
He also spent thousands of dollars on restaurant meals, bars and trips to towns where his children live. Mitchell declined an interview to explain why.
