A nyala is chased by a lion in the South African wilderness in this once-in-a-lifetime experience for the filmer.

In the video, which was filmed in 2015 but has only recently emerged online, the nyala is poised in grassland before it apparently notices something is up.

In the video, filmer and local tour guide Tim Brown can be heard saying: "The nyala ... is sensing something."

The lion suddenly comes into shot and chases after his prey - an antelope native to southern Africa - but it is able to get away among the thickets.

Writes Brown: "It was all about timing and being at the right place at the right time to see this once in a lifetime experience and close miss by the lion hunting the nyala antelope.

"This is unusual behavior but when it is dry, lions can use the element of surprise as antelopes do not expect to be hunted in the daytime by a lion as lions are nocturnal, mostly."
