The U.S. Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan has announced he will not run for re-election in November's midterm elections.<br /> He joins nearly 30 House Republicans who have announced their retirement this year. <br />The timing of Ryan's announcement came as a surprise, as lawmakers had expected him to leave Congress if the GOP were to lose control of the House in the November vote.<br />Speaking to reporters Wednesday, he said he wanted to spend more time with his family. <br />He will retire in January next year. <br />
