A group of furious nationalists on Saturday attacked the 75-year-old mayor of the Greek city of Thessaloniki. <br /><br />Yiannis Boutaris was attending the Pontic Genocide commemoration in the city when a dozen or so angry nationalists instructed him to leave the event.<br /><br />They then threw bottles at him and repeatedly kicked the vehicle which drove him away from the scene.<br /><br />Boutaris is known for his strong anti-nationalist stance.<br /><br />The Pontic genocide was the systematic killing of the Christian Ottoman Greek population carried out in Anatolia during World War I and its aftermath.
