Hundreds of young lads scrum as they take part in centuries old game of hand ball

An annual tradition, the Jedburgh hand ba' was held in the Scots Borders town centre on the first Thursday after Shrove Tuesday.<br /><br />It sees two teams of players run through the streets while they try to get their hands on a leather ba' with ribbons and throw it into the opposition's goal.<br /><br />Teams are separated into Uppies and Doonies, depending on where they live.<br /><br />The game is believed to have been played since the 1500s and features a separate game for men and for boys.<br /><br />Billy Gillies, 71, a stone mason from Jedburgh, said: "This has been one of the best hand ba' games I've ever been to and I've been going for 60 years now.
