An international team of scientists have found that Antarctica has lost nearly three trillion tons of ice over the last 25 years, mostly due to global warming.
The study, published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, also found that the accelerating thaw has caused global sea levels to rise by more than seven and a half millimeters over the same period.
Almost half of the lost ice has come just within the past five years.
Scientists say, at this current rate, Antarctica alone is now on track to raise world sea levels by about 15 centimeters by the year 2100.
