<p>Housing protests in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa, turned violent on June 14 with road and school closures in the area following reports of petrol bombs and fires.</p><p>Locals described</a> the area as a “war zone” and “hostage situation” as roads leading into and out of the town were blocked by protesters.</p><p>The protests followed a large fire in the Qolweni area on June 3</a> that destroyed the homes of 74 individuals, including 31 children.</p><p>Residents in the area are protesting the current backlog</a> for victims of the fire to receive funding from the Department of Human Settlements.
